Hi
A team of District Nurses within our PCT are developing a set of guidelines for venepuncture. Does any one have or know of research for or against skin prep with alcohol or otherwise prior to venepuncture. The NICE Guidelines advocate to skin prep prior to insertion of invasive devices. Does this apply to venepuncture?

I looked into this a few years ago and couldn't find andy specific research. Linked work related to research with diabetics in their own homes and students at a university receiving vaccination. Both studies considered the use of alcohol to clean skin unecessary. From what I gather, just these 2 studies have been cited in stopping the use of skin cleansing for not only venepuncture, but IM injections. I have heard 'experts' take a practical approach and consider that because there is not a device left in situ the risk is reduced. Sorry - not much of an answer. Jan

Hello
Two bits of information. Vanessa York did a literature review on Skin Preparation Prior to Injection. Contact her via the ICNA Yearbook. I also have a printed copy of a paper from 1994 in the Journal of Wound Care January Vol 3 No 1 1994 "The use of alcoholic wipes for disinfection of injection sites"

Looking (without much success)for evidence in favour or against skin prep prior to IV siting for short procedures (IV in situ less than 4 hours). I'm aware of the research around venepuncture & IM injections but not IV cannulae.
Anyone advise?
Thanks

There is a good article in the current BJIC giving both sides of the skin prep argument that you might find useful.

Also try the RCN guidelines (about to be revised I believe) or the CDC
guidance (via www.cdc.gov), or the Marsden manual.
