Hi. Can anyone direct me to where I can find details of regulations covering handwashing facilities in new buildings (new extension) e.g.do sinks for staff have overflows or stoppers? Would appreciate any help. Thank you.

Hi
Handwashing sinks shouldn"t have a plug or overflow. Also the tap must be
offset from the plughole so there is no "splashback"

Hi,
you need to look at Infection Control in the Built Environment. This is available on the NHS Estates Knowledge & Information portal:
http://195.92.246.148/nhsestates/knowledge/knowledge_content/home/home.asp
- you need to register to use this, but it is free.

There is also a great picture of an ideal clinical handwash basin on the NHS estates primary care website:
http://primarycare.nhsestates.gov.uk/secure/content.asp

Basically, clinical handwash basins should be large enough to prevent splashing, have no plug or recess capable of taking a plug, no overflow, be free standing or wall mounted (not embedded in a worktop) and have non touch or elbow or knee operated mixer taps.

Dear Lyn,

The Health Building Notes (HTMs ) from NHS Estates are a pretty sound
starting point.
Try searching on the website.
