Can I ask what other Trusts use for skin disinfection for central line insertion?

Having recently carried out a CVC audit, it came to light that aqueous betadine is being used here, so we are currently trying to change to alcoholic chlorhexidine.

However, a 2% concentration is generally recommended and that is not available in the UK. We are considering a 0.5% alcoholic solution, but wondered if other areas have managed to obtain a different concentration?

Thanks

I was at a presentation yesterday by Martin Arrowsmith, the IV lead from 3M,
who presented that the evidence that strongly came down in favour of
chlorhex. He said that as 2% chlorhex was not yet commercially available in
the UK (although pharmacies may be able to make it up), that 0.5% in alcohol
was preferable for CVC insertion and care as it is still has a longer acting
action than povidone iodine (This work purely in relation to CVC issues
rather than pre-cutting skin prep). I think it was some of Maki"s work that
he presented. Haven"t got Martin"s number to hand but a call through your
local 3M rep should source him for the references or a chat.

Take care to allow the alcohol to fully dry before placing new CVC dressing.
