I have been asked by two health visitors what they should be cleaning their baby scales with. I have advised that they should be cleaning them routinely with a detergent wipe but have come up against some objection when I have suggested that if the scales are contaminated they should be disinfected following cleaning with a chlorine based solution such as Milton.

They are currently using an alcohol wipe for all cleaning procedures.

Can I ask what is everyone else doing/recommending?

We recommend the same as you. Clean with detergent wipes and then if soiled
disinfect with 1000ppm hypochlorite and leave to dry. If the scales are
metal they need to rinse off the hypochlorite after 2 mins. It should be OK
to use alco wipes if scales are visibly "clean" but if they are soiled the
alcohol will be no use as the organic matter will deactivate it. Alcohol is
a disinfectant and NOT a cleaner.
