Although my team (working in an acute setting but with responsibility for HPA nursing function) have bought in a small stock of FFP3 masks (3M supply us) there doesn't appear to be any robust system for centralising a community stock of any PPE. We have been flagging this up locally for some time, but get nowhere! Within the acute hospital we have asked relevant areas such as A&E;, Medical Admissions and ITU (plus ambulance as we are a combined Trust) to buy in a small stock for local use, but have had to chase them several times to make sure the message gets through. Much as I would like our team to be the central holding point, we do not have any budget to buy stocks. Fit testing is being undertaken by our Occ Health team, who have a SLA with the local PCT so will be in the front line for community testing as well. They do not have the capacity to actually carry out the work however, so we are no better off even though we have established a protocol for testing. Occ health now plan to run some "train the trainer" sessions to ease the initial load. |

One of our PCTs has put together 'packs' of key PPE that may be required for avian flu or SARS re-emergence, including masks. These packs are held at key locations across the patch. I am still trying to persuade the others to invest in this, as it avoids everyone having to purchase at the moment |
