The bed spacing as mentioned in the "Infection Control in the Built Environment" 2002 is recommended for reasons pertaining to patient privacy and dignity...in hospital patients often sit in a chair (putting them between their bed and that of the next patient)which is within this spacing.

The Microbiologist concerned was correct when he stated that 3600mm between beds is a recommendation. However, I would totally disagree with the suggestion that the recommendation is irrelevant. The recommendation is not based on microbiological evidence, but from patient safety and handling and moving requirements as suggested by NHS Estates.

As an ICN who works as a Health Planner for both NHS Trusts and PFI consortia, I would be surprised if anyone would ignore these recommendations when undertaking new ward builds or designs. The 3600mm space provides adequate space to accommodate bedside activites whilst maintaining patient privacy and dignity.

Any recommendation that allows staff to perform clinical duties and procedures at the bedside without struggling with curtains, furniture and patients' belongings, has to aid good infection control practice. If we can not have all the single rooms we require, then at least let us have decent bed spaces.
