Many modern hospitals and other healthcare facilities feature decorative fountains in an effort to make patients and visitors more comfortable with their surroundings during a time of stress. The majority of microorganisms in nature persist attached to surfaces within a structured biofilm ecosystem and not as free floating organisms. By their very nature, the wet or damp surfaces of fountains and other water features become coated in biofilm containing microorganisms that can act as a reservoir for disease transmission. Decorative fountains may also pose a risk of infection with Legionella bacteria following aerosol inhalation.
