The opportunity for microbial growth in an enteral feed that is infused over several hours is much greater than in food consumed from a plate in a few minutes. That said, clean hands, clean work surface and avoiding contaminating the spike of the admin set prior to spiking the bag can be achieved at the bed side just as easily as in a clinical room. NICE guidelines for infection control in the community include enteral feeding guidance but also check out the British Association of Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition guidance which is excellent - your dietitians are probably members and will be able to let you have a copy.
