Is any one aware of new protocols regarding the wearing of PPE when transporting infected patients in hospitals?
Hospital Porters have customarily used disposable gloves and aprons when collecting, transporting and delivering patients with infections between wards and departments.
A Trust has recently implemented a new procedure were neither gloves nor aprons are now to be worn during transportation.
Kind regards
Patrick.

Hi Patrick,
There are no new protocols tha I'm aware of but somemone in your hospital (probably the ICN) is clearly using a sensible approach to the application of infection control precautions. Most hospital acquired infections that warrant patients being nursed in single rooms are spread through contact with the patients or the pts immediate environment. It is logical therefore to wear gloves and aprons for significant contact with the patient in his isolation room or when cleaning the environment to minimise contamination of hands and clothing. But hand washing remains the most important control measure. When transporting pts to other depts the portering staff have little or no skin to skin contact when pushing a chair or a trolley and therefore hand washing is sufficient. This also saves embarrassing the patient by wearing protective clothing in public areas.
So I'd say well done to your Infection Control Team for correcting the previous inappropriate practice!

Hi We do not advocate the use of PPE when transporting patients unless the porter is in contact with body fluid. What is the rationale for them wearing it? They should be washing hands between patients and cleaning the chair / bed/ trolley
