Hi everyone, I know it is best practice to use the temporary closure on sharps bins but I am having problems convening some, therefore does anyone have evidence or a very good strong argument other that health and safety to state or support the temporary closure of sharp bins.
Thank you in advance,
Tracy Doherty, Infection prevention & control nurse, Beaumont Hospital, Dublin. Ext 3167 or Bleep 660

It is interesting that you should have started this discussion as one of the members of staff here suffered a sharps injury last week because the temporary closure was in use. She was disposing of a sharp, the lid of the bin was on temporary closure and while struggling to hold the sharp and open the lid she pricked herself. We are considering telling staff that best practice may well be to open the lid at the start of the day and only use the temporary closure at the end of the day.
