My neonatal unit currently use domestic steam sterilisers, the type that can be bought for home use in any maternity shop, for "sterilising" their breast feeding equipment. The bottles are single use. I am not happy with this practice, but can find no conclusive evidence to dictate practice, in the disinfection of such equiptment. Can any one help or advise.

Hi Lisa

We reviewed the use of domestic 'steam sterilisers' in our maternity units
in one group of hospital I worked in. There was no monitoring of the
process with the domestic 'steriliser', so we could not be assured that the
items were receiving adequate thermal disinfection. Our local standards
dictate that we must be able to monitor all thermal disinfection processes.
We had asked to manufacturers to provide a time/temperature display, but
they have not done this yet.

Hope this helps.

Cheers

The home sterilisers are not suitable for multi person use. Every time they are used a residual of water remains in the bottom which may contain endotoxins, - in much the same way as with a bench top steriliser. it is important that these machines are emptied and dried between uses. I will not allow them in my trust other than if they belong to a specific mum for her use only.
