Hi
We are hoping to trial single-use podiatry instruments in preparation for next March.
Has anyone done feasibility studies in single-use vs CSSD in community podiatry services?
Instrapac are recommending discarding instruments as sharps however we have 30 clinics seeing 18 patients a day. Does anyone discard instruments as clinical waste/have you experienced any problems due to weight or instruments piercing bags.
Great to hear from anyone undertaking the same work

Looking into using disposables for minor ops using Robinsons Healthcare though it's proving a bit slow to get it off the ground. Disposal is an issue I am also interested in but thus far have decided that if they are even a hint 'sharp', and most instruments are, they go in the sharps box. In view of this my own thinking is to er on the side of light delicate instruments which tends to be our preference for minor ops. I would presume if you start piercing bags you will create a few risks and end up in Quantanamo! (OK can't spell :-) The costs can be very reasonable depending on the complexity of your instruments. Hope Robinsons gat back to some time and if anyone from them reads this please get in touch!!

Hi We are in a similar situation in Leeds. We looked at workload and cost and realised that with 100,000 interventions per year it was not an economically viable option for single use, we are therefore exploring a centralised option, with an increase in equipment holding. Further the podiatrists did not like the single use nippers etc as they are not cantilevered so could result in RSI's of the users. Hope this helps

We had the same experience with the nippers that you describe Bob, and like you are exploring a central serbvice. This morning I am meeting a manufacturer who claims to have disposable cantelever nippers (not sure how much they cost yet) which apparently he took to a meeting of foot health leads last week and they all seemed to like. I will keep you posted Deb |

Disposal is an issue - either rigid waste containers or sharps containers should be used. The amount generated at one time could affect the processing if using alternative technology as opposed to incineration. Check with your own contractor. |
