Hi,

The Hatfield programme is a great course but I'm a little biased having completed the first BSc(Hons) programme there and then taught one of the modules for two years! I recognise that it doesn't suit everyone.

There are many courses available nowadays; some day release, some block release and some distance learning. It depends what sort of study you can undertake and what suits you best in terms of how you like learning.

In terms of content, any good infection control course should include the sciences that underpin infection control practice - microbiology, immunology, epidemiology etc. Therefore, when looking for a course make sure it contains a significant proportion of science based modules as well as practice related modules.

If distance learning would suit you then I can recommend the PG Cert/PG Dip/MSC Infection Control with the UHI in Scotland. However, I must stress that again this is my personal opinion (I'm doing the MSc and commence my dissertation in Sept, a colleague has completed the PG cert and another is doing the PG Dip). On line learning suits us because we are so far away from anywhere that provides face to face courses.

Essex Uni do an MSc and Thames Valley do a DipHE or BSc. I understand that Cardiff Uni have just started delivering an MSc programme. There is also the HPA(Post Grad) Diploma in Hospital Infection Control. But there are many other courses - Leeds and Manchester, as examples. Other ICNs who have undertaken these courses will no doubt be able to give you more detail.

Wish you luck with finding something that suits you best,

Judy Potter
Vice Chair

PS. The ICNA cannot 'approve' any of these courses but we are in the process of compiling a list of courses with contact details so that IC practitioners can make their own choice about where they might want to study. So if anyone has details about other courses PLEASE let me know ASAP.

Northumbria University offer four infection control modules- three of which can be taken to achieve the BSc (Hons) Practice Development (Infection Control) award or for graduates there is the Graduate certificate Practice Development (Infection Control).

The modules can also be undertaken as stand alone modules. They each have 20 academic credits

We deliver the infection control modules in block weeks of study and the Foundations module will also be run as a distance learning delivery in the next academic year.

Hi,
I'm doing an MSc at Greenwich uni. There is an online module in Management of Healthcare Associated Infection which is very good (just finished it). which would be good as a stand alone module if you wanted that (30 credits).
