The equipment officer at my organisation would like to fit second line filters to all of our suction units. This filter is to be positioned on the vacuum pump side of the apparatus. The rationale for this is to protect the unit if the first line filter i.e. if the filter within the suction liner fails, causing atomised aerosole contamination of the tubing and the unit itself.
My question is how often should this second line filter be changed? Obviously the first line filter is changed after every patient use. However, although the second line filter is deemed by the manufactures instructions to be single use, they claim that it is for single period use, not single patient. Therefore they suggest that most users change the filter when they are visibly contaminated.
My question is, do any of you use a second line filter? is it really neccessary? and if so how often do you change them?
Many thanks
