I have been asked to 'guestimate' the volume of PPE that we will need across 2 PCT's when the 'flu hits!!
Has anyone calculated any of this stuff, or done any work with their local supplies teams?
Thanks for your help.....hopefully!

I looked at the projected attack rate in the general population, worked out what that would be locally based on local pop data, looked at what each wave may bring, multiplied each case by 6 sets of protective clothing per day, allowed for the fact that some staff won't be in to care for the patients anyway, factored in that some staff may have recovered and so will need less protective clothing (what a suggestion..)... and then added the number I first thought of. It's guesstimation at it's finest.

If I get what I asked for there won't be any left for you Sue I'm afraid.

I wonder if the cost of stockpiling protective clothing = the cash value of the NHS overspend at the moment?

Has anyone got PASA's latest position because my understanding that they were saying not to panic and stockpile locally - have I got this wrong then?

No, you're not wrong Deb. I only said I'd estimated what I might need - not what I'd got. With my overspend we've actually got a stock of 3 gloves, half a plastic pinny with the notes from last friday's handover report written on the bottom and one very secondhand surgical mask..

Well Martin ,makes a change from the info being scribbled on the back of a fag packet!!

Glad you find all this as exasperating as me

How have you calculated your needs then?

At the start of the first wave of the Pandemic, there is bound to be some panic, and the demand for stock might peak.
As there are still no guidelines coming from DH, we have put forward a guestimate. Our recommendation is to gradually build a stock of at least 50% of what would be required, and then increase as the budget allows.

In the primary care, our DIPC has advised the GPs to make a list of the essentials such as gloves, surgical masks, handgels, detergent wipes, liquid soaps and paper towels, evaluate the current monthly use and plan for two to three times the amount. Special provision has to be made separately for dedicated Flu clinics.
Of course all these can be superseded if new guideline come along.

Apart from these infection control items, there may also be a requirement for other consumables, like throat spatulas and disposable thermometers, leaflets and information sheets.
Watch out for some recommendations in a forthcoming piece by Hilary Pickles to RCGP.

In the next 2 months we are carrying out an exercise which will involve a dummy pt presenting at Ed and being admitted to a room on the respiratory ward. We will be taking notes on PPE used to enable us to estimate how much PPE is needed.
I'll keep the forum posted when we get results.

I was asked the same thing. I looked up the estimated extra consultations in GP practices (from the DOH I think) and advised the individual practices to multiply their usual stocks by this figure. I don't see how any of us can give a more accurate projection than this, but would be interested if anyone else can.
