Has anyone updated their policy re clinical waste generated by healthcare professionals in private households, since the change in waste disposal regulations? My PCT covers an area served by two councils, one of whom offers a free collection service for large quantities of soiled dressings, the other does not. I'd be grateful for any input. Thanks. |

Two points: 1. We are still waiting for the guidance to be finalised, as it came out for consultation and has not been finalised after this consultation. While we are waiting my H&S; colleagues have written an interim guidance. It is on our website, here is the web address: http://www.wandsworth-pct.nhs.uk/policies/HealthSafety/Clinical%20Waste%20Management%20Policy%20v1.0.doc 2. As I understand it, waste from households does not come under the guidance, so I do not think there are any changes there.

Domestic waste is excluded from the new Hazardous Waste Regulations, but healthcare waste produced by healthcare staff is not, even if it produced in a domestic setting. The revised Purple Book should have guidance on how to deal with it and should be available later this year. I wouldn't bother changing anything until then unless specifically advised to by your local office of the Environment Agency who are responsible for policing the new regs.
