Can any help, we are looking at the use of tourniquets and how to decontaminate them if they are not single use. Does anyone have any literature, protocol or polciy I could look at regarding this.

Hi We have looked at this issue. As a Trust we purchase cleanable ones, however no-one likes them because they are velcro fastening and not very good. Therefore most clinicians use the freebies from reps which have clasps and are made of material and can"t be cleaned. If you speak to reps they will tell you they are single use! We have therefore purchased disposable tourniquets for use with patients with communicable diseases, in A+E when there is trauma etc. I know this goes against universal precautions but we knew that the ones in use were effective but couldn"t be cleaned so we did a risk assessment and cam up with this compromise. regards Janice Rees
