I am currently investigating infections associated with nebuliser therapy and the cleaning, or lack of it, in the clinical setting. My colleagues and I are also looking at disposable nebulisers and wondered if anyone had any experience of any of these issues.
Thanks.

Hi
I have also been wondering about this as nebs are very difficult to decontaminate at a ward level.
According to the MDA notice 2004/020 we should follow manufacturers guidance regarding decontamination and ensure there are no droplets of water remain in the nebuliser.I telephoned one manucfacturer and they they state single patient use and it was up to the individual trust to develop guidelines!

I have recently been advised by the MHRA that manufacturers are required to provide instructions to enable the safe use of their devices. This will include decontamination instructions if the device is intended to be reused, to render it safe.Alternatively, manufacturers may designate the a device as single use.The MHRA say if you have any concerns about the adequacy of decontamination or any other instructions provided about a medical device ,report it to them.
