As anybody any guidence/research on the use of electric fans in a hospital setting. I have been asked for evidence on whether they can be used on our surgical wards or not.

Thanks

Hello
Electric fans are used in many settings.
What does get missed however is the cleaning of them and at times they blow dark dust and grime.
They are easy to dismantle and clean.
Use by all means but make sure they are cleaned regularly before use.
Include as part of the Decontamination Guidance.
I am not aware of research but someone out there may do

Elactric Fans.

Who do you advocate cleans the fans? Is there a health and safety issue
regarding the cleaning of electrical equipment and should they be cleaned by
specified people only? Should nursing staff at ward level be doing this?
We are trying to get around this issue in our Trust.

I wonder if it is time someone in healthcare? asked fan manufacturers to design a detachable bladed fan. It is the blades of any fan that need to be cleaned and are the most difficult to clean. The actual motor mount can be wiped as usual.
Fan blades or fan blades in cages could then conceivably be sent to central supply for proper decontamination.
