Hello,

Does anyone have any information/guidelines for wards as to which type of bins they should have in different areas of their wards, i.e clinical in sluice or domestic in treatment rooms.

Any advice appreciated.

Many thanks

Hello
All waste bins must be robust and have foot pedal and lid. There is a fire regulation which states that all bins in staff and patient areas must be of this nature even if domestic waste. I say this as I had difficulty fiding evidence from an infection control angle for domestic waste and types of containers. I stand corrected if this is not the case. The new guidelines will be at some point this year so it may be worth speaking to Sue Berry at Sheffield who represents the ICNA on the national group.
Hope this is helpful

You can also get silent closing bins foot operated that cannot be closed by hand. Besides the IC benefits it stops scraping the pts off the ceiling from the clattering and banging of noisy bins.

We asked the ward managers to assess what they needed. We now have both
black and yellow bins in most ward bays + treatment areas, yellow in sluice.
We did try just having black in bays but found that segregation wasn"t
taking place and before long yellow only were back in there, full of
newspapers and chocolate wrappers!! Although there is an initial cost in
having 2 bins in some areas, audit have shown that staff are definitely
segregating waste appropriately.

having to scrape pts off the ceiling due to clattering and banging if
lids esp at night.
