A local council is looking to start up a community sharps collection service, using community pharmacies. In essence the public would bring their filled sharps containers (pre-supplied to the home)to the pharmacy for storage and collection.
I am aware there will be all sorts of issues relating to legislation that the council need to sort, but am not directly involved in sorting those issues.
Does anyone have infection control guidance for pharmacy staff operating a similar scheme please - I am looking for something re: documentation, 'what to do if..', sharps safety with the returned boxes, storage, staff vaccination etc, etc
Thanks

Tracey My unde3rstanding under the new pharmacy contract is that pharmacies are not able to take sharps bins any more unless part of a directly enhanced service for needle exchange Deb |

A good starting point would be pharmacy based needle exchange programmes.

Hi Tracey
Many district councils already run this type of a service - I know East Devon were doing it a few years ago, when I worked with them. I think there may be a local authority web site - I found this for you on a google search - http://www.boston.gov.uk/index.php?option=com_content&task;=view&id;=394&Itemid;=3290 at Boston Borough Council.
