Dear All

We are asking the board to invest in MRSA screening and decolonisation and they have asked us to quantify the savings. The evidenec is all a little wooly to sya the leats and I wondered if any one else had been in my position. What evidence did you use?

NHS Scotland has just published a Health Technology Assesment on the clinical and cost effectiveness of screening for MRSA. Althought there are a number of assumptions built into the modelling it does demonstrate value for money over time as well as significant reductions in MRSA prevalence.

I have a copy but not electronically, it's available on

http://www.nhshealthquality.org/ under 'publications' 'HTA'

This is a consultation document and NHS QIS would welcome feedback.

It's not an easy read, but well worth getting into as this will have wide implications for the service if ratified. The reduction over 5 years is modelled on 7% MRSA prevalence and based on a number of assumptions (not all accurate).

I would suggest that you look at the HTA Systematic Review of Isolation

The economic evidence is relatively scant and costs are likely to be due
to reduced length of stay. It might be worth contacting Ben Cooper at
the HPA (Colindale) to see if they have done any additional work on
modelling costs.
