Hi does anyone know of any published definitive guidance as to what exactly is categorised as minor surgery, suitable to be performed without theatre ventilation ie in a GP treatment room? many thanks |

Have just been considering that myself but from the other view point - when is ventilation required. Found in Infection Control in the Built Environment p34 relate to high risk units like operating theatres, special care, burns,HDU's and isolation. The latest guidance for G.P surgery Minor Surgery advise natural ventilation unless problems with pollution or noise. All very wooly! |

HelloIf you e mail me direct on [email protected] I will send the guidance I prepared for the LIFT schemes in Leeds. I tried to give classification of minor surgery and this might help. Jean Lawrence Chair ICNA

We went for the guidance in HTM2025 Ventilation in Health Care Premises, and recommended that the standard given for treatment rooms be adopted for "minor" surgery. This gives a reasonable balance between the specs for theatres, which would be considered way above what is required, and expensive, and effectively doing nothing. This is now our PCTs' standard for new builds and upgrades. Cost is around 10,000 - 15,000 for the ventilation plant depending on the premises. We're also looking at inserting a requirement for some form of post op wound surveillance into PCT contracts with GPs for surgical procedures.
And I've always maintained that there's no such thing as minor surgery... but the list of procedures defined as such in the red book is available here: http://www.redbook.i12.com/rb/Docs/rb829.htm#JD_whatisasession18
