Hi
there are different specifications for differing healthcare environments- e.g. critical care will have more sinks than a general ward area.
Your estates department should be able to give you the specifications for each type of patient/clinical area. This should include type of sink, placement and type of taps etc.
See also the Health Technical Memoranda (used to be on NHS estates web site, but I think you can access through the Dept of Health web site now) documents and the Infection Contro in the built environment

In the 'Guidelines for Hand Hygiene in Irish Health Care Settings' page 7 &
21 it states that:

(1) 'clinical institutions should aspire to installing at least one handwash
sink per 4-6 beds in general open wards and a minimum of one sink per 1-3
beds in critical care areas'
(2) 'Handwash sinks should be independent of patients" and/or en-suite
sinks'
(3) 'Handwash facilities should be positioned close to exit doors of
isolation rooms, wards and units'
