We have been asked to trial a new 'alcohol' handrub. I am concerned as it contains a product that I have never come across! The active ingredients are 'G-Cide' ( gluteral C11-C15 Pareth 9) and also 9.5% ethanol and 2.5% isopropanol. Does anyone know if this meets a suitable standard for health care use. The company claim to have en1500 since 1997, but i'm wary of something so very different!

Hi,
i was intrigued, so I googled it & got this:

"G-cideTM is pH neutral, stabilised glutaraldehyde formulation.

Glutaraldehyde, CHO(CH2)3CHO, has long been recognised as the disinfectant of choice in hospitals and other areas, however the raw ingredient molecule, glutaraldehyde, is limited in the areas of possible application due to the need to activate in order to maximise the germ killing properties is required which results in a highly unstable molecule, with undesirable side effects, such as volatility, high skin irritation and corrosiveness. Activatin means adding a catalyst prior to use.

A renowned South African chemist, Toni Martin, developed and patented G-cideTM, a glutaraldehyde based complex, to make it the most effective chemical for killing bacteria, virus, fungi, moulds and spores, without any of the undesirable side effects attributed to the base active ingredient Gluteraldayde. This produced a product range which is now available as safer, user-friendly disinfectant, steriliser and sanitiser."
