The local haemodialysis unit are looking at adding another bed to accommodate more patients. I am aware of the guidance for infection control in the built environment and the requirement for bed space size of 3.6m between each bed. A debate exists, however, that this guidance is for inpatient wards and not an out patient haemodialysis unit. Is there any guidance available to suggest how far dialysis couches should be apart, and in the absence of guidance should we be assume that a) it is not an important issue to warrant guidance (not my view) or b) that we should be looking at 3.6m as gold standard between the centre of each couch. Although it could be argued that this is an out patient facility, the patients within in it are immunocompromised and have invasive devices in place ie CVC's, and A-V grafts etc.
I would really appreciate advice on this one.

The HBN 53 (2004) has a specific bed space for a bed and couch with a very useful diagram included in the appendix of a typical bed/couch space -
One of the recommendations is that there is a clear space 3feet approx between one curtain and another- this is clearly different to a ward where 1 side of the curtain is shared between 2 beds regards sheila donlon |
