I have recently been asked to advise on whether PCT policy guidance in our trust should state that 0.9% Saline is used for meatal cleansing prior to insertion of a long term urinary catheter in primary care.
Following a search of the literature I am unable to find evidence to support the above procedure and have been asked whether cleansing should be a sterile procedure or a clean procedure i.e. use of cloth and tap water, bath/shower. I appreciate that the inseretion of the catheter will remain an aseptic technique, it is the cleansing solution that I am questioning. |
