Has anyone got advice to give to relatives of a patient who has been diagnosed by a dermatologist as having a rash caused by bed bugs? This resolves each time he is in and appears each time he goes home. I know how to deal with body, pubic and head lice but bed bugs? I can't find any info/advice at all.
I'm assuming wash bed sheets and clothes above 60 degrees and thoroughly hoover the mattress and base of the bed. Anything else?
Thanks

Just in case you are interested I got this info from a very helpful Environmental health office.
Bed bugs are common but rather difficult to eradicate, as they not only infest mattresses but also picture rails and other furniture and fittings. Simple hovering and washing linen etc at above 60 degrees will not apparently do the job. A professional company are required to diagnose the problem areas and then treat. Those on benefits etc may receive financial assistance to complete this treatment.
I've learnt something new today, hoorah

Very interesting. I have had personal experience of this little mite when I worked in India, which I shall never forget! The hotel owners used to put the mattresses on the roof so I presume the UV rays would search and destry (never worked as Debbie suggested they hide in the wallpaper, behind picture etc).

A good leaflet can be found at the e mail address below.

I had a care home with an infestation of these. Despite repeated spraying etc, they could not get rid of them. In the end they took all the residents to Butlins for the weekend & fumigated the place.

Very difficult to get rid of!!

My daughter has just had a similar experience of these in Sri Lanka and they also put the mattresses out in the sun to kill the bugs - but if only we had the temperatures! I found some info on an American site for her which said putting the bed legs into jars or tins prevent them from getting from the room up to the mattress as they are not very good climbers - doesn't look very stylish though! Tumble drying on hot is also thought to kill them in fabrics - same principal as hot South East Asian sun!
