Hi
We have had a couple of staff needlestick injuries involving patients pen devices. The MHRA have said staff should only use a patients pen device as a last resort and use a needleguard when removing the needle. The problem seems to be the newer insulins only come in a pen format so switching to a vial is not an option and therefore the risk to staff will increase.
Has anyone done any work on this or found a workable solution
Many Thanks
Anne

Hello
I had this situation some years ago and then wrote to the company and the MDA at that time. This occurs in Learning Disability where the clients sometimes need the staff to do. In the end the staff devised a safe way to practice.
The company producing the insulin need to be contacted on this. I will happily do this on behalf of those with the problem. Send me your issues and I will try my best. They might listen.

We use Daniels Healthcare sharps boxes which have a device on the lid to allow the safe removal of a needle from insulin pens.
