Does anybody return orthopaedic implants to patients? and if you do what cleaning processes do they go through first?
Also do you return gallstones to patients and how are these cleaned?

In my previous incarnation as a theatre nurse we did both - scary I know. Gallstones were washed in the sink and put into a universal specimen pot with the lid taped up. The same was done with small items of metalwork - screws etc. - and larger ones were put through the instrument washer, bagged and autoclaved. I am NOT advocating this as good practice - it is however common practice in every operating department in which I have worked.

This practise of returning orthopaedic hardware to patients was stopped many years agofor various reasons including patients harming themselves and taking an action against the hospital.

As an ex theatre nurse with over 30 years experience in the speciality, returning gallstones and implants was common practice for many years. However, within my own department this was stopped at least 7 years ago.
